This was a fun project - I wanted to get across the idea of an unusual or different face without giving away how this production will actually 'do' the Elephant Man. The design on the left is inspired by Francis Bacon's 'Pope' paintings - it has quite a painty style to it which gives it an abstract quality which I think works much better than showing an actual photo of someone with a facial disfigurement. The design on the right avoids showing the face completely which I think is quite clever, if I may say so myself, as it touches on the question of whether his face is actually what's important in the story or whether it's the man behind the face that's the key.
