How I Learned To Drive is one of the best plays I've read so far this year, and I read a lot of plays! It's the story of a girl's childhood and her 'driving lessons' (a euphamism for sexual abuse). The playwright manages to explore this theme without making us feel depressed, uncomfortable and without preaching at us. The play is honest and really quite up-beat, and I wanted the poster to convey this feeling rather than anything sad or pitying. The barbie doll idea was the one for me - the doll conveys a too-perfect innocence that can never be real, and the cheeky parking of the car tells us that it's about something dark and sexual, without being depressing. The polaroids on the road have a slightly sadder feel - childhood memories discarded - and the content of the photographs hints at the sinister themes.
