I had the pleasure of photographing this wonderful little puppet for Nutcracker! The Musical. Even though I was planning to completely redraw the puppet, it was important to start with a good photograph so that I could copy the lighting. I chopped apart the photo first to make him squatter and therefore cuter (the original puppet is ever so slightly scary!), gave him a bigger chest, bent him backwards and pulled his legs apart to make him look like he's belting a big note. Musicals often require a cleaner look - less real and gritty, which meant redrawing the puppet to make all the lines and shading super-tidy. After redrawing him, I played with the lighting to darken him, giving it a bit more of a dramatic feel.
