The challenge with Brief Encounter was to create something with a nostalgic, 1940s feel, but without actually looking old-fashioned - it needed to look like a fun, contemporary production, set in the 1940s. I started with something very muted, and it didn't look exciting enough, so I decided to put some bright pink smoke against a black and white photograph, and it all started to make sense. For the title treatment, I've used a 40s-style font, but given it a modern twist by rotating it off-centre. The final design has the perfect balance between an old, familiar story, and something new and unexpected.
